曲についての説明は、このサイトで充分に記述されていると思われる。付け加えるなら、歌詞には1960年代のアメリカの社会的背景、特に公民権運動に関わる部分があり、歌い出しの ”いくつ道を歩けば男は男と呼ばれるのか”という一節にそれがよく表現されている。当時、アフリカ系の男性は成人であっても一人前の大人としての扱いを受けられなかった。女性に至っては、推して知るべしである。
半世紀も前の歌であるが、訴えかけているものには現代にも通じる要素があり、多くの人が共感できる曲であると思う。
